Broadcast Journalism

Sports Broadcasting

Syracuse University

Throughout my years, I haven't been quite sure what I wanted to get into, but I knew it would be in the media world. As a lover of sports, I decided to explore my interests by applying for a pre-college summer program at Syracuse University for sports broadcasting. I got accepted with a scholarship and traveled to New York in the summer of 2024. I was lucky enough to work with renowned proffesors Olivia Stomski and Matt Park. In Newhouse School of Public Communications, I learned how to work all jobs in a newsroom, consistency of work, how to dig deeper and so much more.

In the newsroom, I learned all the different jobs and processes. I learned how to make a layout of segments on a desktop, how to speak, stand and present myself in front of the camera,  control/scroll the teleprompter and introduce the speaker of a segment. They gave me a professional microphone, so I got the feel of a real life situation. In this picture, you can see me in the newsroom after my first ever segment.

The professors taught us how important consistency is, especially for keeping up your image and presence in the media world. To prompt us towards this, they had us make a post everyday while in Syracuse. I posted interviews, weekend recaps, sports news and more.

Gateway

I heard about this opportunity through a friend, Nicholas Slater, that was already working with Gateway Technical College as a Broadcast Opporator. I actually ended up writing a personality profile on him. After learning about it, I was eager to be a part of it and sent in my application. I use a handheld video camera, walk around the court and listen to the director's cues. My favorite part is watching it all get put together on on one computer. You can see the broadcasts on the WGTD Facebook page.

Podcast

Newbies

I have a continuous podcast with two of my close friends, Alyssandra Becker and Dayon McKnight. The podcast is called "Newbies" because each episode we try something new, from food, to games, to sports. Each of us take turns editing the podcasts on Adobe Premeire Pro.

Podcast Process

This is my first year making a podcast and I was able to work with my adviser to expand our recordings from just audio, to video as well. We used our budget to buy chairs, a few tables, microphone stands and lamps to make a nice setting. With that, it was up to me to learn how to edit the visual versions and teach the process to the other podcasters. I loved learning this process and creating a new form of journalism.

Setup

1. Figure out the topic of the episode.
2. Write a basic script to follow along for the podcast.
3. Set up the studio with the chairs, tables, studio lights, microphones, audio recorders and video recorder.
4. Do a test run to make sure everything is working smoothly.

Recording

1. One person keeps an eye on the audio recorders, adjusting volume as needed.
2. Introduce/welcome to podcast.
3. Follow the script, loosly or tightly, and do your thing.
4. Be respectful and think of all possible listeners.

Step 3: Editing

1. Download audios from SD cards onto desktop.
2. Download video clip(s) onto desktop.
3. Open clips onto Adobe Premier Pro.
4. Cut out unnecessary parts.
5. Add the into and outro music and image.
6. Save as an mp4 to post on YouTube.
7. Open mp4 in Adobe Audition.
8. Save as mp3 to post on podcast streaming services.
9. Create title and shownotes describing what the episode is about.
